Probably my favourite traditional song. It's been performed by countless musicians, including Davey Graham, The Byrds, Kristin Hersh, and a phenomenally eerie jazz version by Bill Frisell, Ron Carter & Paul Motian. The simple structure carries a sense of inherent dread that hasn't been blunted, despite the excessive number of jaunty, danceable interpretations I've listened to.
My version owes a huge debt to Bert Jansch's rendition, as does this whole EP to be honest. He was a phenomenal musician who could create dense, intricate arrangements from six strings, and could make an age old murder ballad a thing of vitality and immediacy.
He was huge influence on me and will always remain a constant source of inspiration.
